Who Gets Depressed?
There's no simple answer to the question of who gets depressed. It can be anyone. Estimates are that at any one time over 5% of the population suffers from depression. Age doesn’t matter, although it’s more common in older people and in women. But anyone can experience it. According to the National Institute for Mental Health, in 2004 - that's just ONE year! - almost 21 million adults in the US had some sort of mood disorder (major depression ; dysthymia, which is a more minor but long-standing depression; or bipolar disorder). That’s almost 10% of all adults! This is not an unusual problem these days. And from the news reports I see, it seems to be getting even more widespread. Adults get a mood disorder at an average age of 30. I guess I was a late bloomer. I didn’t realize it until I was 37.
Why Does It Happen?
I’ve seen, and research shows, that sometimes depression follows a severe loss of some kind, like the death of someone you love or the loss of a job. This initial response to a loss is very normal, but then in susceptible people your brain kind of gets stuck in that attitude and just can’t let it go. Why?Other times, the depression seems to just appear out of nowhere, and that’s how it happened to me. Since I had no “reason” to be depressed, I realized there was something wrong. Natural Approach
I’m not going to talk about diagnosing types of mood disorders here. I think that may be important if you want a prescription for a pharmaceutical drug. The type of help I’m going to talk about has to do with eliminating depression in natural ways, not using patented medicines. What I want to show you in these pages is how the food you are eating, as well as other circumstances in your life (your “environment”), can move you toward depression. And how identifying and correcting them eliminate the problem. These factors are different, yet in many ways the same, for people in a variety of different categories, whether they are
women
men
children
teens
or a brand new mother.
and in different situations - such as being
elderly
obese
overly busy
or the recently bereaved.
Did you know that even
dogs and cats
can become depressed? I hope this web site will help you figure out what may have contributed to making you depressed so that you can make the changes naturally to leave it behind forever.
