What Are Some Treatments For Depression?
As you know by now, I think that many people can treat their depression successfully by improving their diet. But there are other natural treatments for depression that are also reported to produce results. I'm going to suggest a sequence of actions I would use, in order from the easiest and most direct to the more remote. All in my opinion, of course.
Eat Better
So what does this really mean? "Experts" argue over the details, and sometimes over the general approach.
Here's what I did.
And here's what I suggest that you do. Note that by clicking on each topic, you can get more specific information. Avoid sugars, especially fructose, and refined flour. This one step can make a huge difference in the way you feel and in the health of your body. Eat a lot of vegetables and fruits. Try for a variety of colors: red, green, orange, yellow, purple, brown. Organic if you can afford it and can find them. Or grow your own. Drink more water. This keeps your digestive processes working better. Eat a good quality protein source. Again, organic if you can afford/find it. Use nutritious oils. Try to use olive oil or butter in preference to other oils. Avoid anything with trans-fats in it. Eat nuts and seeds. I'd suggest raw walnuts and almonds especially.
Support Your Digestive System
Probiotics
Stress, antibiotics, alcohol and caffeine all can devastate on our intestinal flora. The solution to this problem is to make sure you have plenty of probiotics, gut flora that can be added to boost your own intestinal flora. An unhealthy gut flora can lead to "leaky gut syndrome," something that can cause lots of different physical problems. Digestive Enzymes
If they enzymes aren't there, we can't digest our food. And for people suffering from depression, protein digestion is especially important. You can get additional digestive enzymes to provide the boost your own may need. And sometimes the problem is not producing enough stomach acid to allow the enzymes to work. This is especially likely if you regularly use antacids or proton pump inhibitors (PPI's).
