Could You Be Malnourished?

You walk, you talk, you run and think. How could you be lacking in critical nutrients?

Well, remember your brain is the most active of all of your organs. It needs a constant supply of high quality nutrients and depression is one of the first signs that it's having trouble.

If you have trouble with memory or mental clarity, if you are often depressed, if you have digestive problems, if you have creaky joints, if you have any of the following "diseases of civilization:"

  • diabetes mellitus
  • cardiovascular disease
  • hypertension
  • stroke
  • cancer
  • dental cavities
  • periodontal disease
  • appendicitis
  • peptic ulcers
  • diverticulitis
  • gallstones
  • hemorrhoids
  • varicose veins
  • constipation
  • or if you are obese, believe it or not, you are probably undernourished!

    How can I say this?

These problems were largely unknown only 100 years ago and their prevalence is increasing as I write. Though obesity has leveled off - they are saying we just can't get any bigger here in the US - diabetes is still increasing. The diseases above are still rare among people living in traditional (primitive) conditions where they have not adopted our Western diet.

Click on any of the topics below to see what each factor in our modern lives has to do with under nutrition.

Fast Food It tastes so good, is so cheap and so available. What makes it so bad for us?

Prepared Food It's such a time saver! When I get home from work, I just don't have the energy to fix anything else. Don't even mention breakfast!

Digestive Problems I take a proton pump inhibitor for my heartburn. Is there anything else I should think about?

Poor Soils If our soils don't have the nutrients we need, how can the plants and animals we rely on avoid being malnourished?

Agribusiness Much has changed from the days when family farms produced most of our food.
