Here's How Healthy Eating Eliminated My Depression

when I first noticed the difference in the way I felt after eating this whole food supplement, I didn't connect it to "merely" healthy eating. I thought there must be some “active ingredient” that could be isolated and used to affect mood. That was the result of living for 50 years with the medical model of disease. According to the medical model, drugs are what we need in order to cure disease.
Not The Medical Model
Over time I came to realize that what I was experiencing was the robust health that comes from providing the body with the complete nutrition that it needs in order to function optimally. I had begun eating a whole food that had been growing naturally under close to perfect conditions, so it contained all the vitamins, minerals, proteins, oils, and trace elements that constitute living things.I realized that much of what I’d been eating before this (and, truth be told, I still was) had been lacking in nutrients. I had been relying on processed foods (deli meats and sausages, canned and frozen vegetables, white bread, ice cream, crackers & chips) but I learned these were missing a lot of important nutrients. I ate fast food which was likewise limited. I thought abdominal gas, often painful, was normal. And my bowel function alternated between diarrhea and constipation.
Whole Food Supplement
I feel very lucky to have found this whole food supplement because it really turned me around - eliminated the depression and changed my thinking. It is wild-grown blue green algae that is screened from the water, meticulously prepared and put into capsules or tablets so that it’s easy to eat. Indeed Paul Pitchford in “Healing With Whole Foods” describes it as the most therapeutic of all the edible microalgae. I emphasize that this is a whole food supplement because whole foods are what humans have been eating for hundreds of thousands of years. Only within the last 80 or so years have any vitamins been available in pill form. In fact, vitamins were only discovered in the early 20th century!
Whole Food Model
As I came to understand that my body had been telling me it needed better food, I began changing the way I ate. I added more vegetables to my meals. I almost eliminated sweets, and I drastically reduced my reliance on prepared foods including my particular weaknesses: bread, crackers, and chips. Now I cook and enjoy it. I make a lot of soups and stir fries using lots of fresh vegetables. (Even old vegetables taste great in soup!) Salads are a daily occurrence and I make them more substantial by adding nuts or seeds, cheese or meat or leftover cooked fish. For dinner I usually serve meat, poultry or fish with a salad and a cooked fresh vegetable, but I also enjoy trying new combinations of meat or poultry cooked with vegetables, herbs, and spices (think Thai, Italian, Mexican, French, Chinese, etc.) Now, if I’m offered some cheesecake, I take a very small slice, enjoy it, and say Thank You! I still eat small amounts of dark chocolate and occasionally have a slice of bread or a few crackers or chips. But these are no longer the first thing I turn to when I’m hungry. Now I’m more likely to grab a small handful of nuts or a piece of fruit. And I never drink soda.
